The Prime Minister has reportedly handed AFL broadcasters audio of a cheering Ramadan crowd to cover any future stadium ‘booooos’ directed at him — though he didn’t even need to ask. ABC apparently edited the cheers in on their own.
At his recent Ramadan appearance, the PM was treated like a rock star, with crowds waving and applauding. Contrast that with Australian sporting events, where sections of the audience were less enthusiastic — loudly booing instead.
The AFL is reportedly considering making the audio swap a standard feature. Political commentators note the irony: a PM of a country getting booed by his own citizens, cheered by immigrants, is perhaps the clearest signal yet of the direction Australia is heading.
For now, stadium booing may no longer be as intimidating — especially when a festival crowd can drown it out.
