Immigration Minister Tony Burke has confirmed Karl Stefanovic cannot return to Australia until he apologises and proves he is “at least ISIS-adjacent.”
Burke said Karl’s mistake was interviewing the wrong controversial figure overseas instead of returning through one of the government’s approved extremist pathways.
“Being an Australian citizen makes it tricky,” Burke said. “But until Karl shows genuine remorse and becomes a recognised security concern, our hands are tied.”
Home Affairs said Stefanovic may be allowed home if he submits a trauma narrative, agrees to monitoring, and appears on Insiders to describe the incident as “a journey.”
