MELBOURNE — The ABC has rejected claims it paid insufficient attention to Jewish hostages during the Gaza conflict after successfully securing the release of Charlie Pickering from ABC headquarters.
The comedian was returned safely to the public just days after suggesting Grace Tame’s latest ABC project may be “problematic”, before later clarifying that he remained a strong supporter of Tame and her advocacy.
ABC Chair Kim Williams denied Pickering had been pressured to change his position.
“Charlie was completely free to express his views,” Williams said. “He simply reflected on the matter and arrived at the correct conclusion.”
At press time, ABC executives were celebrating what critics described as the broadcaster’s most successful hostage release since October 2023.
