Anthony Albanese has been forced to clarify his controversial $6 million Marrickville Golf Club grant after previously claiming it was intended to prevent raw sewage entering the Cooks River during heavy rainfall.
Questions emerged after the grant contained no requirement for sewage works, with the NSW Government having already picked up the infrastructure bill.
Accused of misleading Parliament, Albanese now says he simply got his sewage projects mixed up, explaining that the works were actually intended for Lakemba Mosque.
The confusion dates back to a March visit alongside another prominent Muslim leader in MP Tony Burke, when the pair attempted to strengthen Labor’s votes with the Lakemba community.
Worshippers began heckling the PM, triggering an apparent fear-induced bowel evacuation that left mosque officials with an unexpected cleaning bill.
Mosque representatives have been compensated, with the $6 million originally allocated to the golf club should just covering the costs.
Albanese has apologised for the mix-up.
