The Greens have called for Australia Day to be moved from January 26, arguing the current date is too insensitive to Indigenous Australians and reflects a colonial past that should be left behind.
Instead, the party has floated October 7 as a more fitting national day, describing it as a “coming-together moment” that better represents modern Australia. Greens figures pointed to mass demonstrations outside the Sydney Opera House as proof of multicultural unity, calling the scenes a powerful example of collective expression by new Australians.
Critics noted the uncomfortable symbolism of the date, but Greens insiders dismissed concerns, saying October 7 represents the new Australia — louder, angrier, and no longer distracted by barbecues, beaches, or celebration.
